Where the Berries Grow

With Max, the dormouse, Gabi, the hazel grouse, Willi, the hedgehog

                         Early morning at the clearing

Willi emerges from the butterbur leaves and glances over the clearing.

                      - I wonder whether Max is up yet. -

        - Morning, Willi. Of course I'm up, we have a plan, don't we?

By the way, do you have the bag? -

                - Watch out, here comes the equipment! -

 - I don't know Max, isn't it too late for strawberries and too early for hazelnuts? -

    - Willi, you're soo lazy! It's settled, we will cross over the brook and find out. -

             - Well, it's still possible that Gabi won't have time today. -

                                - Gabi... -

                  - Shush! she is still tidying up -

The three of them set out for the brook. On the way they meet the frog.

    - Further down a tree had recently fallen across the brook, a perfect bridge. -

 - Remember, you will have to do it again on the way back. - he calls after them.

           - No way - mumbles Willi, finally reaching the other side.

      - Come over here! Here are the sweetest strawberries you ever tasted! -

                   - And here are the biggest hazelnuts! -

They feast on berries and nuts until one after the other falls asleep.

           - Wake up! we have a long way home. - Gabi suddenly cries.

Sailing on a tree trunk, the crossing of the brook is easy enough.

                 - Keep away from currents! - cautions the trout.

- On  a full stomach!  Willi complains, - and where did you say the clearing was? -

            - There, in the tree is the nightjar, let's ask her. -

                                  - The clearing?

Right beyond the fir trees -

                     - Follow the mushrooms, the nightjar said. -

                    - I see some light between the trees. -

         - That's no clearing! That's a forest monster! - whispers Willi.

      - It does have a strange glow - replies Gabi, - but it doesn't move. -

                              Max brings out the telescope.

   - I see a snail moving over moss. Definitely Schistostega pennata, Luminous Moss. -

     - I wonder for whom it glows. - says Willi, mystified. - For us! - cries Max.

                      - We should get going. - Gabi insists.

                         - Look! Over there is our clearing! -

          - We made it! we are home! - the three friends shout together.

                        - Good night Gabi, Good Night Max!

                              - Good night, Willi!

                            - Good night everybody!
